摘要:Invited by the journal of Foreign Literature Studies, Mr. Chen Zhongyi, who is director and research fellow at Institute of Foreign Literature of Chinese Academy of Social Science, secretary-in-chief of Chinese Foreign Literature Academy, specialist in Latin literature, expresses his views on some issues in the foreign literature studies in China. He maintains that cultural duality is actually a fallacy, which decomposes our tradition and independence while enriching our culture. The trends of anti-tradition in the 1980s and deconstruction in the 1990s made quite lot of people believe that the world did not need tradition any longer. The living styles, aesthetic customs, ways of recognition and value orientation of a nation help determine their literary classics that conversely help maintain these national cultural norms and animate their identical affections of national cultural identity and union. Both literary theory and literary writings in the twenty-century had the tendencies of formalism and nihilism. The answers for this phenomenon can be found in the ideologicalization of western literature, the cold-war and hot-war thinkings, the daily-changed social lives and highly developed science and techniques. Nevertheless, all the aforesaid cannot be the excuses for self-importance and divorce from practice. Foreign literature studies in China should attach importance to European and American literatures as well as to the literatures of the developing countries. The academic study in China must determine its direction if it wants to find a right way; it must locate its position if it wants to determines its direction. The right things Chinese scholars should do are to give priority to their own viewpoints, their own tradition and the development and demands of their own nation.
